How to Repair a Softboard with a Hot Glue Gun
Softboards are built for fun and durability, but dings, fin cuts and small tears are inevitable. The good news? You can fix most minor damage quickly using a hot glue gun.
What You’ll Need
- Hot glue gun
- Glue sticks (clear or white)
- Utility knife or scissors
- Sandpaper (optional)
- Clean cloth
Step 1: Clean the Damaged Area
Start by wiping down the damaged section with a clean cloth. Remove any wax, sand, or salt so the glue bonds properly. Let it dry completely.
Step 2: Trim Loose Material
If the foam or outer layer is torn, carefully trim away any loose or frayed pieces using a utility knife or scissors. This helps create a clean surface for repair.
Step 3: Heat the Glue Gun
Plug in your hot glue gun and allow it to fully heat up. You want the glue to flow smoothly for an even application.
Step 4: Apply the Glue
Slowly apply hot glue directly into the crack, dent, or tear. Fill the damaged area completely, but don’t overfill—just enough to seal and protect the core.
Step 5: Smooth the Surface
While the glue is still warm (but not too hot to touch), gently smooth it out using the tip of the glue gun or a flat object. This will help maintain the board’s shape.
Step 6: Let It Cool
Allow the glue to cool and harden fully. This usually takes a few minutes. Avoid using the board until the repair is completely set.
Step 7: Optional Finishing
If needed, lightly sand the repaired area for a smoother finish.
Quick Tips
- This method is best for small dings and minor tears.
- Avoid using hot glue on large structural damage.
- Always test your repair before heading into the surf.
A simple hot glue repair can extend the life of your softboard and get you back in the water fast—no need for expensive fixes.
